How to Effectively Degrease Range Hoods and Exhaust Fans

ANDRE GEOVANY SAMPAIO

Range hoods and exhaust fans are essential for a clean, odor-free kitchen, but they require regular maintenance to remain efficient. Grease buildup not only affects performance but also poses safety risks. Follow these steps to keep them in top condition:

  1. Turn off the appliance: Before starting, make sure the range hood or exhaust fan is turned off and unplugged if possible.

  2. Disassemble parts: Remove filters and any detachable components. Consult the user manual to identify what can be safely removed and cleaned.

  3. Prepare a cleaning solution: Mix warm water with a degreasing dish soap or white vinegar. For heavy grease, add a few teaspoons of baking soda to the solution.

  4. Soak the filters: Submerge the filters in the solution and let them soak for 20–30 minutes. Afterward, scrub gently with a soft brush to remove stubborn grease.

  5. Clean exterior surfaces: Dampen a soft cloth or sponge in the cleaning solution and wipe down the exterior. Avoid abrasive tools to prevent scratches.

  6. Tackle the interior: Carefully clean the inside of the hood with a damp cloth, avoiding electrical components.

  7. Rinse and dry: Rinse all parts with clean water and dry them thoroughly with a soft towel to prevent rust or water stains.

  8. Replace or maintain filters: If your hood uses charcoal filters, replace them as per the manufacturer’s guidelines. Metal filters should be cleaned regularly for optimal performance.

  9. Prevent future buildup: Use a degreaser spray on surfaces periodically to reduce the accumulation of grease.

  10. Reassemble and test: Once all parts are clean and dry, reassemble the hood or fan and test its functionality.

With these steps, your range hood and exhaust fan will remain efficient and safe. Cleaning every two weeks or after heavy use will make the task easier and keep your kitchen fresh.
